Nenko Balkanski
As strange as it may seem, Bulgarian state-run galleries distinguish between foreign and local art: the former is shown at the foreign art gallery, behind Nevski cathedral, and the latter at the national art gallery, in 1 Battenberg Sq. It is unclear if the distinction is a remnant from the past where everything belonged either to us, the Socialist republic and its brethren this side of the Iron Curtain, or them, that is the outside capitalist world, or a result of an inferiority complex. Anyway, the national gallery has been doing a good job at highlighting local classics, and the current exhibition of works by Nenko Balkanski (1907-1977) is an excellent opportunity to check whether his 1930s, 1940s and 1950s paintings have anything in common with his western counterparts’.
